About

I’m into place, and its role in the minds and lives of people.

I’m also

  • a former news writer desperate to believe in the future of quality journalism
  • a part-time Master’s student in Geography
  • a current employee of a non-profit project affiliated with public radio stations around the country.
  • born-and-raised product of a small northern U.S. town

This blog is a place where I talk about:

  • mapping
  • geographical data and GIS
  • online tools for investigation of raw data by reporters or other interested individuals
  • online mapping tools for public participation and investigation
  • the project of American public radio, and the future survival (or not) of individual radio stations through increasingly local reporting and identity
  • U.S.-Canadian border (the physical one and the less tangible ones)
  • race, in relation to rural/urban/suburban places
  • social class, especially in relation to rural/urban/suburban places
  • setting-centric literature
  • regional food and drink
  • Northern New York state

I’m interested in both the profound and the trivial, and I look forward to your comments.

One Response to About

  1. Hey there! I had to write and say hello, nice blog. I noticed that you said you’re from the 23rd Congressional Dist of NY – me, too. I am a cartographer who is currently unemployed; it is unusual for me to run across people people from the same area who do the same kind of work!! I’m from Oswego, actually, and have done mapping since 1979 or so.

Anyway, cool blog – lovin’ those maps. I found your blog on a search for WPA and the Albany PO.
